Es una fría tarde de marzo y Shelly Ro conduce sobre la autopista 5, va a Los Ángeles y es que ahí al lado del Aeropuerto Internacional (LAX) en la ciudad de Hawthorn está su casa, el lugar desde donde la joven actriz y cineasta se traslada a todos lados. En esta ocasión se desvía un momento, deja el volante del Fiat blanco que conduce y conversa con Celebrando Latinas Magazine sobre ‘White Ink’, su opera prima. Shelly actuó, produjo y escribió el guión de este cortometraje en el que cuenta la historia de Lou y Sophie, un par de mejores amigas que se embarcan en un viaje de campamento que realizan cada año y lo que normalmente era diversión y juegos, da un giro y las pone de frente a sus verdades, todo esto en medio de la naturaleza. Shelly nació en la que se dice es la frontera más visitada del mundo, en Tijuana, México ahí vivió hasta que tenía 19 años cuando por sus estudios se mudó a la ciudad de San Diego. El cortometraje nace de una de esas ‘locuras’ que a ella se le meten en la cabeza. Shelly no se queda quieta nunca y gracias por ello, ya que esto nos permite conocer el trabajo de este talentoso ser humano que considera que no hay ningún problema que un par de Latinas no pueda resolver en un par de horas. A Shelly le interesa eliminar el estereotipo que existe en el cine sobre los latinos, “los latinos comemos cereal porque somos humanos no porque somos latinos, todos somos los mismos seres humanos respirando, si cambiamos los personajes o cambiamos la historia seguimos siendo seres humanos”. Por esto la joven tijuanense ha comenzado a trabajar en el séptimo arte y en sus ‘locuras’, como ella las llama, siempre está acompañada de su ‘crew’ un grupo de gente que la quiere, entre ellos su esposo, su mamá, su suegra y sus grandes amigos.
Una infancia de ilusión
De su infancia recuerda su imaginación desbordada en la que había todo un mundo formado por personajes, canciones y actuaciones, soñaba con escenarios soñaba con, algún día, convertirse en una gran actriz. Shelly está absolutamente consciente de los muchos regalos que le ha dado la vida, y sabe también quién ha sido el motor, de lo que hoy tiene. “Mi mamá merece un premio, y todo el reconocimiento del mundo. Ella me inculcó la importancia de cuidar a los que me rodean, el valor de terminar lo que empiezas, el honor de mi palabra, el amor por todo ser viviente, el respeto a los demás y sus puntos de vista, aunque sean diferentes a los míos”, dice Shelly. Actuar es el amor de mi vida, dice emocionada. “Es como si una magia se apoderara de mí, y lo siento como una responsabilidad grande, es como entender ponerte en los zapatos de otra persona que tiene otra vida”, dice Shelly quien después de obtener un Doctorado en Sexualidad Humana se mudó a la ciudad de Los Ángeles para perseguir el sueño de ser actriz.
Shelly tiene muchos motivos para estar feliz. Su corto fue presentado en el festival de cine de Carolina del Sur, en la Ciudad de Nueva York además de que fue aceptado en el festival de cine de Niza en Francia. Y aunque la actuación ha sido lo suyo desde que tiene uso de razón, al principio la vida se encargó de llevarla por un mundo distinto: el de la salud pública. Un año antes de graduarse como psicóloga en la Universidad Estatal de San Diego, Shelly comenzó a colaborar en el programa Fronteras Unidas Pro Salud, el programa de Planned Parenthood en México. Gracias a que hablaba inglés, comenzó a dar clases de sexualidad en Tijuana, cuando se dio cuenta, habían pasado ya tres años. Llegó entonces la oportunidad de trabajar en Estados Unidos dentro de Planned Parenthood, ahí se desempeñó como gerente de ‘Health Navigator’ uno de los programas de la institución para posteriormente convertirse en la administradora del programa binacional de esta organización. A pesar de estar completamente concentrada en su trabajo, decidió hacer una maestría y después un doctorado en un programa internacional de sexualidad. Durante cuatro años Shelly se trasladaba una semana al mes a San Francisco, hasta que terminó el doctorado y decidió comenzar una nueva aventura. “Cuando finalicé la escuela mi suegra me preguntó: ‘¿ahora qué sigue?’ y entonces dije: estudiar actuación’”, relata Shelly. “Entré a la escuela de actuación Joan Baron en Santa Monica”, este conservatorio de teatro es reconocido por haber tenido entre sus alumnos a actores de la talla de Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise y Susan Sarandon, entre otros. Mientras se preparaba se dio cuenta que producir era parecido a lo que hacía en Planned Parenthood. Fue entonces que Shelly se puso a investigar y entendió que eso era algo que ella podía hacer. “Ellos me iban diciendo como escribir y como hacer las cosas”. Y puso manos a la obra, cuando menos se dio cuenta, ya había filmado su primer película en Tijuana, y para ello recurrió a diferentes locaciones de la ciudad y a los parientes y amigos que se unieron al proyecto. “Todo se fue dando de tal forma que hicimos todo en dos meses”. Me gusta mucho que en esta producción somos varias mujeres de distintas etnias y eso le da un valor único”, dice contenta. Como todo amante del cine Shelly Ro tiene actores, actrices y directores favoritos.
“Ví Titanic en el cine 11 veces, Leonardo Di Caprio es uno de mis actores favoritos, es una película que me marcó”. Sobre las actrices dice que todas le parecen espectaculares, Shelly también habló de su gusto por el cine de la época de oro mexicano y por la admiración que siente por Quentin Tarantino y por el mexicano Guillermo Del Toro. “Actualmente hay mucho talento pero si no hay algo armado que deje dinero es difícil que te apoyen, si puedes demostrar que vas a hacer dinero entran a tu Proyecto, pero de otra forma no”. Ahora Shelly con 35 años de edad se prepara para lo que sigue, el último año ha sido un año de transformaciones. Al momento de cerrar esta entrevista Shelly seguía conduciendo por las autopistas de California, solo que en esta ocasión iba a bordo del Chevy Spark blanco que comparte con su esposo y ahora no iba a ningún festival de cine, ahora estaba como voluntaria llevando a las personas a sus lugares de votación correspondientes. Shelly Ro is White Ink
It’s a cold March afternoon and Shelly Ro drives on Highway 5, heading to Los Angeles and that is where next to the International Airport (LAX) in the city of Hawthorne that her home is located, the place from where the young actress and filmmaker begins all her travel destinations. On this occasion a moment is diverted. Where she leaves the steering wheel of the white Fiat that she drives and talks to Celebrando Latinas Magazine about ‘White Ink’, its debut opera that premieres on New York City. Shelly acted, produced and wrote the script for this short film in which she tells the story of Lou and Sophie, a couple of best friends who embark on a camping trip they make each year and what was usually fun and games, however it takes a turn and leaves them facing many hidden truths all this in the middle of nature. Shelly was born in what is said to be the most visited border in the world, Tijuana, Mexico where she lived until the age of 19 when she moved to the city of San Diego to pursue her studies. The short film is born from one of those “crazy things” that she gets into her head. Shelly never stays still and is thankful for this energy, since this allows us to get to know the work of this talented human being who considers that there is no problem that a couple of Latinas cannot solve in a matter of hours. In her “madnesses”, as Shelly Ro refers to this, she is always accompanied by a gang of people who love her, including her husband, her mother, her mother-in-law and her great friends. Shelly is interested in eliminating the stereotype that exists in the cinema about Latinos, “Latinos eat cereal because we are human, not because we are Latino, we are all the same human beings breathing, if we change the characters or change the story we are still human beings. ” This is why the young Tijuanense has begun to work in the seventh art and in her ‘crazy things’, as she calls them, a group of people who love her and is always accompanied by her ‘crew’, including her husband, her mother, her mother in law and her great friends.
A childhood filled with dreams
From her childhood she remembers her overflowing imagination in which there was a whole world formed by characters, songs, and performances, she dreamed of stages, she dreamed of, one day, becoming a great actress. Shelly is aware of the many gifts that life has given her, and also knows who the engine has been, for who she is today. “My mom deserves an award and all the recognition in the world. She instilled in me the importance of caring for those around me, the courage to finish what you start, the honor of my word, love for every living being, respect for others and their views, even if they are different from those of mine,” says Shelly. Acting is the love of my life, she says excitedly. “It’s like magic takes hold of me, and I feel it as a big responsibility, it’s like understanding putting yourself in the shoes of another person who has another life,” says Shelly who after obtaining a Doctorate in Human Sexuality moved to the Los Angeles city to pursue the dream of being an actress. And although acting has been her thing since she can remember, at first life was responsible for taking her through a different world: that of public health. A year before graduating as a psychologist at San Diego State University, Shelly began collaborating in the United Frontiers Pro Health program, the Planned Parenthood program in Mexico. Thanks to her ability to speak English, she began teaching sexuality in Tijuana, when she realized, three years had passed. Then came the opportunity to work in the United States within Planned Parenthood, where she served as manager of ‘Health Navigator’ one of the institution’s programs to later become the administrator of the binational program of this organization. Despite being completely focused on her work, Shelly Ro decided to take a master’s degree and then a doctorate in an international sexuality program. For the next four years, Shelly moved one week a month to San Francisco, until she finished her doctorate and decided to start a new adventure. “When I finished school, my mother-in-law asked me:‘ now what next? ’And then I said: study acting’, ”says Shelly. “I entered the Joan Baron acting school in Santa Monica ‘’, this theater conservatory is recognized for having had among its student’s actors such as Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, and Susan Sarandon, among others. While preparing for her next adventure, she realized that producing was similar to what she did in Planned Parenthood. It was then that Shelly began to investigate and understood that this was something she could do. “They were telling me how to write, how to do things.” And she got down to work when she least realized, she had already filmed her first documentary in Tijuana, and for that, she turned to different locations in the city and to the relatives and friends who joined the project. “Everything went in such a way that we completed the project in two days.” I really like that in this production we are several women of different ethnicities and that gives it a unique value, ”she says very happy. Like every movie lover, Shelly has favorite actors, actresses, and directors.
“I saw Titanic in the cinema 11 times, Leonardo Di Caprio is one of my favorite actors, it is a film that marked me.” About the actresses, she says that they all seem spectacular, Shelly also told us about her taste for the cinema of the Mexican golden age and for the admiration she feels for Quentin Tarantino and the Mexican Guillermo Del Toro. “Currently there is a lot of talent, however, if you are unable to prove the project will be profitable, it’s unlikely that you are going to have support.” Now Shelly, 35 years old, prepares for what follows, the last year has been a year of transformations. She has many reasons to be happy. Her short participate in the South Carolina Film Festival and while we chatted she was informed that her project was accepted at the Nice film festival in France. During the conclusion of this interview, Shelly continued driving on the highways of California, only this time she was aboard the white Chevy Spark she shares with her husband and now she was not going to any film festival, now she was volunteering to take people to their corresponding polling places.
